La Cantine à domicile is a meal delivery program designed to provide home support and facilitate access to healthy food. Frozen meals, prepared and delivered by our certified member organizations, are available at low cost on our platform or by telephone.
Social pricing is a component of the program that makes these meals available to seniors in economically vulnerable situations. How are meals made available? Upon referral by a social or health care worker, and depending on eligibility criteria, the meals, which are already low-cost, may be subject to an additional discount of up to
75 %.
The La Cantine à domicile program is a lifeline for many people in Quebec. Not only does it ensure access to healthy, affordable meals for the general public, it also embodies vital support for individuals who would otherwise find themselves isolated and malnourished, particularly the elderly.
Unlike the La Cantine dans les écoles program, La Cantine à domicile does not benefit from dedicated government funding, which makes your support essential to its sustainability. This year, 1,760 people benefited from this essential service; 412 used the social tariff, all of them people facing challenges of financial precariousness.
To better understand the concrete impact of La Cantine à domicile and the realities experienced by its beneficiaries, we share with you the testimonials of our members operating the program across the province. They share with us their unique perspective and the special bond they forge with their community.
Dorothy Champagne, customer service manager at La Maryse, part of the La Corbeille Bordeaux-Cartierville organizationthe Canteen at Home project has been at the heart of the program for the past three years. She recalls a situation where La Cantine à domicile came into its own: "One customer had nothing to eat when she came home from hospital. By placing an order immediately, we could deliver to her home the next day." A striking example of the concrete help provided.
Beyond the logistics, Dorothy asserts that the impact of her work is human above all. "Often, they [customers, Editor's note] need reassurance, to talk with a real person who listens to their needs.". For many, these exchanges, however brief, are rare moments of connection. "I'm the only person they talk to all day. They often thank me for being patient and very kind."
For Dorothy, the importance of La Cantine à domicile lies in three factors: the accessibility and affordability of healthy, delicious meals, combined with humane service. "This is a necessary need for the majority of the clientele we serve, as they are no longer able to cook. We strive to have very affordable prices, very good food, and above all excellent service."
At La Table Ronde de Saint-Léonard, Doris Pérez, program coordinator La Cantine à domicile insiste : "Service doesn't stop at delivery". She explains that the delivery drivers don't just drop off the bags; "Customers, often seniors, open their doors to us with confidence. We help them carry the bags and put them away, sometimes even into the freezer." These simple gestures become opportunities for valuable human interaction.
Every day, Doris observes the impact of loneliness, isolation and precariousness on her customers. This is where La Cantine à domicile comes in, not only with meals, but also by creating authentic moments that reassure and break the isolation. "It's not just food we bring, it's a human presence. The exchanges, however brief, create a relationship of trust. For many, we've become a daily landmark."
When asked to describe the importance of La Cantine à domicile in one word, Doris's answer is powerful: "Essential."
Finally, Chantal Cyr, sales manager at Chics Plats for the Chic Resto Popthe founder of La Cantine à domicile, who has been with the company for 24 years, is in direct contact with customers every day. Her long experience gives her a unique perspective on the program's impact. For her, the role of La Cantine à domicile is to "simplify the lives of users by offering them the opportunity to eat in an easy and appropriate way."
Beyond food, Chantal stresses the importance of "to establish a relationship of trust with the customer by offering an attentive and sympathetic ear." In fact, the word she chooses to describe La Cantine à domicile is : "Benevolence."
